What If You’re Already Good? (A True Story About Doubt and Breakthrough)

I’ll never forget this one lesson.

She walks in—first time, brand new student. Big personality, great energy, super fun to talk to. Not shy at all. But also not cocky. She didn’t walk in like she owned the room—she walked in like someone who wasn’t totally sure what she had.

She says, “I wanna work on Tennessee Whiskey.”

Cool. Let’s go.

She starts singing…

…and I’m sitting there scratching my head like, wait a second—what is happening right now? I was expecting a beginner. What I got was a performance.

She wasn’t just good. She was ridiculously good. Every vocal riff Chris Stapleton does—locked in. Soulful. Controlled. Authentic. Honestly? She sang it better than I ever could.

I just sat there stunned.

When she finished, I looked her in the eye and said, “That was amazing.”And she goes, “Really?! You think so?”

I’m like… what?! YES. How do you not hear what I’m hearing?!

And that’s when it hit me.

She didn’t come to me for technique. She didn’t come to learn how to sing. She came to me for confirmation.

She needed someone to validate what she already felt inside but didn’t fully believe—that she was good. Maybe even great.

And the wild part is… this happens all the time.

Some of the best singers I’ve ever worked with come in thinking they’re way behind. They think they’re a mess. And I’m sitting there thinking, You’re not a mess. You’re an album waiting to happen.

Yes, sometimes we work on technique. That’s part of it.But sometimes, the only thing holding a great singer back is the way they talk to themselves.

Here’s the truth:If you’ve been singing for a while… if you’ve got this little voice in your head saying, “I think I might actually be good”—but then another voice comes in and says, *“Nah, probably not”…

That second voice? It’s lying to you.

You don’t need to “get good.” You need to stop gaslighting your own talent.

You might already be ready. You just need someone to say, “Yes. You’ve got it.”

And that’s what I’m here for.

If this story hits close to home—if you're wondering what your voice is truly capable of—book a session with me at Stellar Vocals. I’ll help you get the confidence to match your talent.
